Background

The accession of 10 new member states to the EU opens important new doors for Wales. It also presents a challenge to the EU to show that political integration does not lead to cultural uniformity.

Recent scare stories about illegal immigration, job losses and a loss of identity generated by the British media and some politicians, has resulted in widespread misunderstanding, scepticism and mistrust about EU enlargement in Wales as elsewhere in the UK.

Despite indications that Welsh people are more open minded about Europe than their neighbours in the UK, they need to be reassured that the opportunities offered by the new member states are significantly greater than any perceived threat.

Above all the citizens of Wales need more information about the enlargement of EU that took place on 1 May 2004. Since then, many people have noticed that an increasing number of people from these countries are taking up jobs that could not be filled locally. Bridges need to be built between the host country and the new residents from the new EU member states to avoid any tensions. This can be achieved most effectively through cultural dialogue.
