8. Country profile: Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. It is at the crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa and plays a bridge building role. Craft and tourism play a big part in the island's economy and life. The Republic of Cyprus gained its independence from Britain in 1960 In 1974 the island was partitioned after a period of violence. Although efforts have been made to settle the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the UN the country still remains divided. However the ban on crossing to and from the south has been lifted on 23 April 2003 for both Turkish and Greek Cypriots.
9. Culture: Cyprus takes its culture from the influences of Europe, the Middle East and is the result of centuries of constant invasions. The island abounds with museums, Turkish Baths and mosaic floors.
