Cultural Explosion Brussels Launch

06 December 05

Culture is a great means of communicating. By sharing each other’s cultures, bridges can be built that cross over continents. Catrin Finch – Harpist and Patron of Creu Cyfle- Cultural Explosion

Key people from the creative industries from all over Europe gathererd in Burssels in November for the Brussels launch of Creu Cyfle – Cultural Explosion.

During the launch at THE CENTRE, Brussels, Catrin Finch performed pieces of music that critalizes the aspiration to build cultural bridges between Wales and the New Europe which is Creu Cyfle – Cultural Explosion’s aim: ‘Moldau’ by Smetana the Check composer, a piece by the Welsh composer William Mathias and the traditional Welsh folk tune Bugelilio’r Gwenith Gwyn.

George Ingber, Deputy Head of Unit Information and Communication DG Enlargement led the discussion on culture as a means of communication. He illustrated how the intercultural bridges built over the centuries have directly contributed towards the EU that now exists. He added that culture has been a very important tool to defend democracies against totalitarianism and will continue to play an important role in the future develpment of a peaceful enlarged Europe.

IWA and Arts Council of Wales Chairman, Geraint Talfan Davies, suggested to the Brussels audience that culture must now play a central role in filling the vacum that currently exists in the EU following the controversial No votes to European Constitution.

David Hughes, European Commission Cabinet Member for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism, encouraged the partnership to think of the next project opportunity, quoting various sources of possible Commission support. Culture Commissioner Jan Figel, who encountered the Creu Cyfle team at the Cardiff Youth Summit recently, also sent his support to the project. (see photo)

A selection of key actors in the field of culture, youth and communication had an insight into how Creu Cyfle’s has been communicating through cultural activities in Wales. The event was kindly hosted by Angelsey born Sian Hughes, THE CENTRE’s rising Welsh-European star and communications expert.

The project was showcased in Brussels through a video diary showing how Creu Cyfle gives young people new experiences of the cultures of their new neighbours.

Many have asked the Creu Cyfle team how they can get involved. Our answer is to build a bridge of your own. That is why we are organising the Creu Cyfle –Cultural Explosion conference and project development workshops on the 20th of February 2006 (see Conference section on website). This hopes to assist interested organisations to consider the options available to them to create their own links and tips as to how to get started. The workshops will offer training sessions on new innovative European opportunities for the creative industries - a fast growing sector with no boundaries.

Galeri Caernarfon, the multi million pound EU funded centre for the creative industries, will be the creative heart of Europe for two days in February 2006.

Catrin Finch will host and perform at the Creu Cyfle gala concert on Sunday night, February 19-an opportunity to celebrate the new cultural bridges being built between Wales and the new member states. Catrin will be joined by musicians and dancers from partner countries as well as, of course, by all the project participants.

Cultral actors from Wales are invited to develop new links through the media, performing and visual arts, language, literature and cultural tourism.

By then, the mosaic, created by artists Andrew Bolton and Maureen O’Kane in collaboration with Caernarfon area schoolchildren and commissioned by Gwynedd Council and Cywaith Cymru, will be completed and will be a permanent symbol of the new stepping stones appearing between Wales and the new Europe.
