The IWA works with a wide range of academic experts across the Universities of Wales and beyond. It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cardiff University, under which the IWA will work the university's Wales Governance Centre and other departments to further each other's aims. The IWA has also worked on projects with Cardiff University's Centre for Advanced Studies, Cardiff Business School, the University of Glamorgan, and Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Welsh Politics. It is also discussing projects with Bangor University’s Department of Banking and Finance.
