Inspire Wales Awards 2013

We are living in a new age of austerity. There is certainly no doubting the austerity of our economic circumstances, and yet, on the evidence of the first three years of the IWA Inspire Wales Awards, there is nothing austere about the spirit of individuals and communities in Wales. It is these difficult circumstances that so often bring out the best in people, that challenge their creativity and determination.

I am certain that we will see this again in the nominations for the IWA Inspire Wales Awards 2013 that we are launching today. As in the previous three years we will see a rich variety of talent and inspiration, of a kind that moves our society forward, contributing to its individual and communal well-being, to our culture, environment or economy, to the quality of our lives.

Once again our wish is to recognise and honour those active citizens who innovate and inspire in their various fields – whether in the public, private or voluntary sectors – people who do not stand back or leave it to others, people who take the initiative, make a difference and inspire others.

From the outset the scheme has sought to recognise excellence and innovation as well as active involvement in civil society in Wales. It will also champion equal opportunities.

There are some changes in our categories for this year – notably a new category for digital media – a change made to respond to new ways of engaging with and mobilising people.

The IWA Inspire Wales Awards would not have been able to reach out to so many without the support of our primary media partner, the Western Mail. I thank them for their generous and enthusiastic support for the

scheme since its very inception. Deep thanks are also due both to new sponsors and to those who have returned to support us again this year.

So I urge you all to spread the message, and when you see people that deserve this recognition do not hesitate to nominate them. We look forward to hearing and promoting the inspirational stories that make these awards so worthwhile.
