The Role of Universities in the Modern Economy
The IWA National Eisteddfod Lecture 2001 was given by Professor
Deian Hopkin
In a fascinating critique of the role of contemporary higher education
Professor Deian Hopkin examines the function of universities
in regenerating their local economies and stimulating enterprise.
Within the wider UK, European and global contexts, he examines the
prospects facing Universities in Wales and the realistic options available
to them to meet the challenges of the coming decade. Of four identities
open to Universities in the modern age he states that Welsh Universities
must become entrepreneurial in their outlook.
Professor Deian Hopkin is the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive
of South Bank University. Born and educated in Wales, he taught History
at Aberystwyth until 1992 when he became a Dean, later Vice-Provost,
of London Guildhall University.
This book is published by the Welsh Academic Press.
